Prepare Your Home for Freezing Temperatures

With temperatures dropping below freezing in Charleston, it’s time to take some important steps to protect your home’s plumbing system. In preparation for these cold days and nights, our plumbing team recommends the following tips to keep your home safe and sound during this icy season.

  1. Open your kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals out of the reach of children.
  2. Let the cold water drip from faucets served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipes (even at a trickle) helps prevent frozen pipes.
  3. Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night, instead of lowering the temperature at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but this can prevent a much more expensive repair job if pipes do freeze and burst.
  4. If you will be traveling during a cold weather snap, leave the heat on in your home and set it to a temperature no lower than 55° F.
  5. Make sure everyone in your family knows where the water shutoff valve is and how to open and close it in case a pipe does burst.

If a pipe freezes, make sure that you take the following precautions:

  1. If you turn on your faucets and nothing comes out, leave the faucets turned on until water flows again.
  2. Do not use electrical appliances in areas of standing water. You could be electrocuted.
  3. Never try to thaw a pipe with a torch or other open flame because it is a fire hazard.
  4. You may be able to thaw a frozen pipe using a hair dryer. Start by warming the pipe as close to the faucet as possible, working toward the coldest section of pipe.

Finally, if your water pipes have already burst, turn off the water at the main shutoff valve in the house and leave the water faucets turned on. Then, call LimRic Plumbing, Heating & Air at 843-620-6810.

Go Tankless!

Here at LimRic Plumbing, Heating and Air, we make every penny count! Did you know that choosing a tankless water heater can save you and your family over $100 per year? Who would’ve known! A tankless water heater cuts the energy usage in half. Tankless units only begin to heat the water once the faucet is turned on, and they operate on natural gas or propane. The key advantage is that they eliminate the extra cost of keeping 40 to 50 gallons of water hot in a storage tank. Less energy equals less money being spent!

Interested in switching your water heater to a tankless unit? We encourage you to give us a call at (843) 225-2665.

How To Avoid Garbage Disposal Problems

Garbage disposals are great to have in any household because they prevent stinky garbage cans and make clean up after an evening of cooking a breeze. How can you ensure that your garbage disposal continues to work properly and efficiently? You must be very careful about what you send down your disposal.

Garbage disposals are meant to break down foods and send them through the pipes. Just because you may think something is safe to put into the disposal does not mean that it is. The following items should never be placed in the garbage disposal:

  • Fat or Grease
  • Pasta
  • Rice
  • Stringy Vegetables
  • Potato Skins
  • Whole Fruits or Vegetables
  • Coffee Grounds

If there is ever an issue with your garbage disposal don’t take the risk of sticking your hand down the drain. Let one of our professionals solve the problem for you! Give our team at LimRic Plumbing, Heating and Air a call at (843) 639-4051.
