Why HVAC Maintenance Is Mandatory

Just like most things in your home, your air conditioning unit needs regular maintenance and checkups to keep it running smoothly. We’ve created a list of three easy-to-do tips for homeowners to maintain their HVAC units over the years.

  1. Replace your filter. One of the simplest of tasks in HVAC maintenance is changing out the filters, but many homeowners simply forget to do so. Depending on your home and lifestyle, your filter should be replaced every one to three months. Not sure how often to replace your filter? Ask a professional, who can evaluate your home’s specific needs based on size, occupants, pets, smoking habits, and more.
  2. Check the unit fan. Before you power on your AC unit each spring, take a moment to check the fan. The fan mounted on top of the outside condenser should be inspected every so often for cracks and chips on the blades.
  3. Clean around the unit. Bushes can begin to branch out too close to the unit or grass can grow into the machine, affecting the amount of air it is able to intake. Keeping the area around an outdoor unit well-manicured is key.
  4. Schedule a checkup. At least once each year, homeowners should hire a professional to inspect and perform preventative maintenance on an HVAC unit. This works to identify and address issues before they become a problem (like losing heat on Charleston’s one snow day).

December’s Give Back Grant Supports Camp Rise Above and Postpartum Support Charleston

Our Give Back Grant recipients for December are Camp Rise Above and Postpartum Support Charleston. The Give Back Grant is a monthly donation of $500 to local nonprofit organizations.

The LimRic Give Back Grant was initiated in February 2016 and demonstrates “LimRic Pride” by donating $500 to two 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations every month. David Miles, owner of LimRic Plumbing, Heating & Air, said, “LimRic Pride is the backbone of our company and it emphasizes the community spirit.  We are humbled to give to charities that offer support for people in different walks of life, since it’s the people that make up our community.”

The winners of the grant are chosen from Facebook nominations and voting. Individuals are invited to nominate their favorite charity on our Facebook page. Then each month, several charities are selected to take part in a two-week long voting process on the our Facebook page. The two charities with the most votes at the end of the voting period receive a $500 check from us.

Camp Rise Above, founded by Barbara Van Thullenar Denton in 2008, is a unique non-profit organization that provides fun, life changing camp experiences to children with serious illnesses, life challenges, and disabilities. They have grown to serve more than 58,000 children in South Carolina, offering high quality camp programs to hundreds of children each year.

“We believe all children deserve to experience the magic of childhood, regardless of their medical status,” said Executive Director, Erin Marie Ulmer. “That’s why we are so grateful to LimRic for their generous donation which will provide life-changing moments for Lowcountry children in need.”

Postpartum Support Charleston was founded by Helena Bradford after the loss of her daughter to postpartum depression. The organization is dedicated to eradicating the stigma surrounding maternal mental illnesses (such as depression, anxiety, OCD, and psychosis during and after pregnancy) to ensure all women who suffer receive support. In addition, Postpartum Support Charleston hosts a peer-led support group for women and their families.

“We don’t want anyone else to experience loss caused by postpartum depression,” said Elaine DeaKyne, Executive Director of Postpartum Support Charleston. “It’s through charitable giving, like LimRic’s Gives Back Grant, that we are able to provide hope and help and to bring awareness to postpartum depression and anxiety.”

Go Tankless!

Here at LimRic Plumbing, Heating and Air, we make every penny count! Did you know that choosing a tankless water heater can save you and your family over $100 per year? Who would’ve known! A tankless water heater cuts the energy usage in half. Tankless units only begin to heat the water once the faucet is turned on, and they operate on natural gas or propane. The key advantage is that they eliminate the extra cost of keeping 40 to 50 gallons of water hot in a storage tank. Less energy equals less money being spent!

Interested in switching your water heater to a tankless unit? We encourage you to give us a call at (843) 225-2665.

Understanding SEER

Choosing an air conditioning unit that’s the right size for your home can be a challenge. A unit too small will have to overwork to keep your home cool in the summer, increasing your electric bills. A unit too large can cost more upfront than necessary.

SEER ratings are helpful tools that match the right unit with the right home. SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio and it’s an important number when choosing a system. The minimum SEER rating, set by the federal government is 13, and the maximum rating possible is 25. Finding the right SEER rating for your home is based on square footage, energy efficiency of the home, time regularly spent in the residence, and the general climate of the area.

How Often Should I Change My Air Filters?

We’re all guilty of forgetting to changes the filters in our home, but neglecting to do so for an extended period of time can lead to increased allergens and a decrease in your HVAC unit’s performance. The frequency with which you change your filters depends on several factors, including the type of filter you use, how many pets are in your home, and how many people live in your home.

As a general rule, standard air filters should be changed every 30 to 60 days. Check out the chart below to find the specific time to change your filters, and don’t forget to set a reminder in your phone so that you don’t forget!

Scenario Optimal Time Span
Standard Rule Every 30 to 60 Days
If You’re Allergy Prone Every 20 to 40 Days
If You Have One Pet Every 60 Days
If You Have More Than One Pet Every 30 Days
If You Have No Pets and No Allergies Every 90 to 120 Days

Common Air Conditioning Problems

The summer is here, which means air conditioning units are working harder than ever. Our team here at LimRic Plumbing, Heating & Air has been providing expert air conditioning sales, service design, and installation to the greater Charleston area for more than 50 years. Throughout the many years of experience, we’ve come to understand the most common AC problems. Most of the air conditioning woes we run into today involve the following parts and components.

  1. Fuses: A burnt, damaged, or loosened fuse means a broken air conditioner. Our technicians always check fuses and replace them as necessary.
  2. Drain Lines: Debris often gets trapped and clogs drain lines. Once clogged, drain line condensation may cause extensive water damage to your home or business.
  3. Relays: Relays act as switches that automatically shift to “on” or “off” directing varying components to do as they are told.  It is common for relays to wear down over time or to become accidentally stuck.
  4. Capacitors: Damaged or burned out capacitors will need to be replaced to restore power to your air conditioning’s components.

Let LimRic Plumbing, Heating & Air help with our up-front fixed pricing options to make your air conditioner work, as it should, and at an affordable rate.

How To Catch A Leak Before Major Damage Occurs

Many times, your home or plumbing system will show signs of a leak long before there’s a puddle in the middle of your floor. If you know the signs to search for, you can catch a leak when it’s small and prevent costly repairs. Take a few minutes each month to thoroughly check your house for these warning signs.

  1. Small Water Spots on the Walls and Ceilings
  2. Weak or Overly Damp Ground in the Yard That’s Not Caused by Rain
  3. Reduced Water Pressure
  4. A Mildew Smell
  5. Small Cracks in the Foundation
  6. An Increased Water Bill
  7. The Sound of Water Dripping

It’s always best to catch a leak early by watching for these signs. If you see any of them, don’t hesitate to call a trusted, fully trained technician from LimRic Plumbing, Heating & Air at (843) 474-2401 to repair your home’s pipes.

Four Ways To Save Money On Your Electric Bill This Summer

Summertime is here and temperatures are rising, but that doesn’t mean your electric bill has to rise, too. Save money and live efficiently this summer with these four tips to reduce your electric bill.

  1. Close the blinds. The sun can heat up a room rapidly. Keeping the sun from shining directly through your windows will cut down on cooling costs.
  2. Use air conditioning efficiently. Before leaving the house, set the thermostat to 76 or higher. If bearable, turning off the air conditioning at night when it’s cooler is also more energy efficient.
  3. Opt for energy-saving products. Using energy-efficient products, like tankless water heaters, will drastically reduce your energy bill.
  4. Plant shady trees. For a more long-term solution for cutting down summer energy costs, trees that provide shade to your home will reduce cooling costs.

Three Reasons Air Conditioning Maintenance Is Important

Charleston is notoriously hot and humid, and we all rely heavily on our air conditioning units to keep us cool in the summer months. All year round, though, it’s important to keep your unit maintained so that it’s ready for the sweltering heat. Check out three reasons regular air conditioning maintenance is important.

  1. Fixing Issues Before They Arise: No one likes an air conditioning emergency. Regular maintenance and inspections ensure that problems are fixed before they cause a headache.
  2. Staying Efficient: Having a technician check your unit for clogs and leaks will enable the unit to run as efficiently as possible.
  3. Saving Money in the Long Run: Fixing problems before they become complicated ensures that you’re simply repairing your unit instead of having to purchase a new one. Proper maintenance guarantees the longevity of your air conditioning system.

Water Softener Systems: They’re Important!

Let’s face it, hard water is a problem that most homeowners come into contact with more than we’d like to admit. Hard water can cause many issues within your home and to your well-being. Hard deposits on and around fixtures, spots on glass shower doors, dingy clothing, foul-smelling water, dry or itchy skin after bathing, and more are all caused by a hard water supply.

Fortunately, there is a solution! A water softener system can be installed in your very own home or business. The cause of hard water is an abundance of common minerals such as calcium and magnesium. The minerals can damage your skin, appliances, and fixtures. By installing a water softener, you can remove the ions from calcium and magnesium by replacing them with sodium.

The benefits you can receive from using a water softener are endless. Installing a water softener will keep your clothes cleaner, make your water taste better, increase your appliance performance, and increase your water pressure.
